Abstract
Purpoe
To evaluate the characteritic of fihing-related ocular injurie.
Deign
Retropective obervational analyi of a computerized databank.
Method
The United tate Eye Injury Regitry wa ued to analyze 143 patient with fihing-related ocular injury. Epidemiolgic and clinical information wa evaluated including the age and gender of the ubject, claification of ocular trauma, urgical management, and final viual acuity.
Reult
Of the 732 cae of port-related ocular trauma, 143 (19.54%) occurred while fihing; of thee, 79% were male patient who ranged in age from 6 to 68 year (mean, 37 year). Corneal laceration, globe rupture, and hyphema were the mot common diagnoe at preentation and were caued by fihing hook, lure, and weight. Thirty-five bytander are included in the tudy. Thirty-eight percent of patient had viual acuity le than 20/50, and 21% had a viual acuity of le than 20/200. Open globe injurie portended a poor viual outcome compared with cloed globe injurie.
Concluion
Fihing-related ocular injurie repreent a large percent of port-related trauma, often reulting in ignificant viual lo. Preventive meaure uch a the ue of protective eyewear hould be advied in thi activity.
