Abstract :
Purpoe To evaluate macular and nerve fiber layer (NFL) thickne in normal and glaucomatou eye of children 3 to 17 year old uing optical coherence tomography (OCT-3). Deign Obervational cro-ectional tudy. Method One hundred fifty-ix eye of 79 patient were enrolled in thi intitutional tudy. Fifty-two eye (33.3%) met criteria for glaucoma and 104 (66.7%) were normal. There were 44 female (55.6%) and 35 male (44.3%) ubject whoe age ranged from 3 to 17 year old (mean 9.5 year, tandard deviation 3.5 year, median 9 year). The OCT-3 (Carl Zei Meditec, Dublin, California) wa ued to obtain a fat macular thickne map a well a a fat retinal NFL map of each eye. Data from pecific location around the macula, a well a total macular volume, wa analyzed. imilarly, the retinal NFL can report average NFL thickne from pecific location around the optic nerve. Data from the uperior temporal and inferior temporal ection wa analyzed. Reult There wa a tatitically ignificant difference in macular thickne and NFL thickne when normal eye were compared againt thoe with glaucoma, in all quadrant tudied (all P value ≤.001). Mean macular volume wa 7.01 ± 0.42 mm3 v 6.57 ± 0.85 mm3 for normal v glaucomatou eye, repectively (P < .001). Concluion OCT may prove valuable in the early diagnoi of glaucoma. We have found a difference between normal and glaucomatou eye in children, imilar to that reported in adult tudie. Further invetigation of OCT teting in children hould be conidered.
