Abstract :
Purpoe
To report the viual outcome of multiple laer treatment for macular edema attributable to branch retinal vein occluion (BRVO) and to determine if any prognotic factor exit for improvement.
Deign
Retropective chart review.
Method
A private practice with four vitreoretinal urgeon performed laer treatment on 88 eye of 88 patient with macular edema econdary to BRVO from 1984 to 2003. Mean preoperative and potoperative viual acuitie were collected after each laer treatment. Final viual acuitie were alo documented.
Reult
All 88 patient received at leat one laer treatment, and 46 patient of the initial 88 underwent multiple treatment. Overall, forty-one (46.6%) of the total 88 patient improved by 2 or more line, wherea 33 patient (37.5%) were within 1 line of the preoperative viion, and 14 patient (15.9%) worened by 2 or more line. The mean final viual improvement wa 0.92 line for all 88 patient. The group of patient that reponded favorably to the firt laer treatment (n = 37) howed an overall improvement of 3.5 line. However, patient who reponded poorly to the firt laer treatment reulted in an overall worening of viion by 0.96 line.
Concluion
Our tudy found that multiple laer treatment can improve viual acuity and reolve macular edema and that each additional laer treatment give a patient a modet chance of viual improvement. A poitive or table viual repone to firt laer treatment portend a favorable prognoi with ubequent laer treatment.
