Abstract :
Purpoe
The etiology of optic nerve druen (OND) i unknown. A leading hypothei i that eye with OND have a mall cleral canal. The mall cleral canal preumably lead to optic nerve fiber compreion, ganglion cell degeneration, extruion of axonal mitochondria, and calcification of the extruded mitochondria. To determine if ubject with OND have cleral canal that are maller than ubject without OND, we ued optical coherence tomography (OCT) to meaure the cleral canal in ubject with and without OND.
Deign
Propective, obervational cae control tudy.
Method
The tudy wa conducted with ubject recruited from the clinic of the John A. Moran Eye Center, Univerity of Utah Department of Ophthalmology and Viual cience. The tudy population included 25 ubject with OND, 13 unaffected firt-degree relative of OND ubject, and 17 control ubject. All ubject underwent meaurement of the cleral canal with OCT. The main outcome meaure wa the cleral canal area calculated by OCT.
Reult
The average area of the cleral canal were a follow: control eye: 1.832 mm2, unaffected eye of ubject with unilateral OND: 1.836 mm2, eye of unaffected firt-degree relative: 2.067 mm2, and eye with OND: 2.520 mm2. The cleral canal area of unaffected eye of ubject with unilateral druen wa not ignificantly different from the control. The eye of firt-degree relative and eye with OND both had cleral canal area ignificantly larger than the control.
Concluion
cleral canal ize i probably not an etiologic factor in the pathogenei of OND.
