Abstract :
Thi tudy conited of a propective clinical trial to ae the rik of amblyopia recurrence after ucceful treatment of aniometropic or trabimic amblyopia. One hundred and fifty-ix children who were younger than 8 year of age, who had received continuou treatment for the 3 previou month, and who had improved at leat 3 logMAR level during the period of continuou treatment were enrolled in the tudy. Recurrence wa defined to have occurred if treatment wa retarted within 52 week of dicontinuation of treatment becaue of a nonreplicated reduction in viual acuity of 2 or more logMAR, or if a reduction of viual acuity of 2 or more logMAR wa confirmed by 2 examination, 52 week after ceation of treatment. Recurrence occurred in 35 (24%) of 145 patient who completed follow-up (95% confidence interval 17% to 32%) and wa imilar in patient who topped patching (25%) or atropine (21%). In patient treated with moderately intene patching (6 to 8 hour per day), recurrence wa more common when treatment wa not reduced prior to ceation than when treatment wa reduced to 2 hour per day prior to ceation (42% v 14%, odd ratio 4.4, 95% confidence interval 1.0 to 18.7). The author conclude that approximately one fourth of uccefully treated amblyopic children experience a recurrence within the firt year off treatment. Thi rik i greater when treatment i abruptly dicontinued rather than when it i reduced to 2 hour per day prior to ceation.–Michael D. Wagoner
