Abstract :
Purpoe To ae cataract progreion after intravitreal triamcinolone injection. Deign Retropective, interventional, cae-control tudy. Method Forty-two phakic eye of 37 patient were injected one, two, or three time with intravitreal triamcinolone for variou indication. Noninjected phakic fellow eye erved a the control. The mean follow-up time for ingle injection wa 12 month, for multiple injection wa 14 month, and for control group wa 13 month. Len tatu, bet-corrected viual acuity, and refractive error were recorded at baeline and at each follow-up examination. Reult At the lat follow-up, change in poterior ubcapular cataract and refractive error from baeline were ignificantly different between ingle triamcinolone-injected eye and the control group [0.7 ± 0.2 (mean ± EM [arbitrary unit] v 0.2 ± 0.1, P = .02; and −0.5 ± 0.1 diopter v −0.2 ± 0.1 diopter, P = .01, repectively). For multiple-injected eye and control eye, change from baeline in corticonuclear cataract (1.1 ± 0.2 v 0.2 ± 0.1), poterior ubcapular cataract (1.1 ± 0.2) and refractive error (−1.8 ± 0.4 diopter) were ignificantly different (P< .001, P< .001, and P< .001, repectively). Viual acuity did not change after ingle injection (P = .83) and in control group (P = .19) but decreaed after multiple injection (P = .006). Eleven tudy eye and two control group eye underwent cataract extraction during tudy period. Corticonuclear and poterior ubcapular cataract progreion ignificantly correlated with follow-up time (P = .003 and P = .02, repectively) and number of injection (P = .01 and P = .04, repectively). Concluion ingle intravitreal triamcinolone injection induce poterior ubcapular cataract development, wherea multiple injection reult in all-layer cataract progreion.
