Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate potoperative corneal welling a a predictor of corneal endothelial cell lo after phacoemulification cataract urgery.
Deign
Propective obervational cae erie.
Method
Thirty patient planned for routine phacoemulification cataract urgery were included. Ultraonic pachymetry and pecular microcope endothelial photography of the central and naal portion of the cornea and Orbcan II lit-can tomography were performed preoperatively and the day after urgery. The 30 patient were elected from 41 patient baed on their increae in central corneal thickne: the firt 10 cae with a <5% increae, the firt 10 with a 6% to 20% increae, and the firt 10 with a ≥20% increae. The ame meaurement were repeated after 1, 2, and 3 month. The primary outcome meaure were corneal endothelial cell lo and increae in pachymetry. everal other parameter were alo regitered, including age, degree of cataract, viual acuity, phacoemulification time and energy, total operation time, and the amount of infuion fluid ued.
Reult
The central corneal welling at potoperative day 1 wa trongly correlated with the central corneal endothelial cell lo at 3 month (R2 = 0.785, P< .001).
Concluion
In thi erie, with large variation in the corneal welling at the firt potoperative day, the degree of permanent corneal endothelial damage wa reflected in the degree of early potoperative corneal welling. Meauring the difference in pachymetry at potoperative day 1 i a ueful way to ae the effect on the corneal endothelium exerted by the phacoemulification procedure.
