Abstract :
Purpoe To examine the near viual clinical performance of an accommodative intraocular len (IOL) when compared with a tandard monofocal IOL in a fellow eye comparion. Deign Propective, randomized fellow eye comparion. Method Thirty patient (60 eye) with bilateral cataract but otherwie normal eye were recruited from a ingle univerity hopital cataract waiting lit. Patient were randomized to receive either the 1CU accommodative IOL in their firt eye or the Acryof MA30 monofocal IOL. The alternative len wa then implanted in the econd eye 4 to 6 week later. At all follow-up viit, a full aement wa made of ditance, near and reading viual performance, and accommodative amplitude. Reult Data are available for all patient at 6 month and 20 patient at 1 year. At 6 month, no difference wa found in ditance-corrected viual acuity between the two IOL. Of the 1CU eye, nine patient (30%) could read J6 or better at a reading peed of 80 word/min or better. In thee nine patient, the mean difference in the amplitude of accommodation between the two eye wa 0.71 diopter. Concluion No meaurable variable ditinguihed eye that developed functional reading viion from thoe that did not. The accommodative IOL appear to produce improved near viion in ome eye, but it doe not work in all eye, and in eye where there i apparent accommodation, there i a dicrepancy between ubjective reading performance and the modet meaured increae of accommodative amplitude.
