Abstract :
Purpoe
To determine whether correlation between vacular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) or interleukin-6 (IL-6) contribute to the pathogenei of macular edema in eye of patient with branch retinal vein occluion (BRVO).
Deign
Retropective cae-control tudy.
Method
Nineteen patient with macular edema with BRVO and even patient with non-ichemic ocular dieae (control group) were tudied. The degree of retinal ichemia wa evaluated in term of the area of capillary non-perfuion, and the everity of macular edema wa examined by optical coherence tomography. Aqueou humor ample were obtained at the time of combined vitrectomy and cataract urgery, and VEGF and IL-6 level in aqueou humor and plama were determined by enzyme-linked immunoorbent aay.
Reult
Aqueou level of VEGF (351 ± 273 pg/ml) and IL-6 (7.10 ± 6.51 pg/ml) were ignificantly elevated in patient with BRVO compared with the control patient (119 ± 38.7 pg/ml and 2.27 ± 1.11 pg/ml, repectively) (P = .0017 and P = .0052, repectively). Aqueou level of VEGF wa ignificantly correlated with that of IL-6 (P = .0396), and aqueou level of VEGF and IL-6 were correlated with the ize of the BRVO non-perfued area (P < .0001 and P = .0331, repectively). Aqueou level of VEGF wa correlated with the everity of macular edema (P = .0306).
Concluion
VEGF and IL-6 may be involved in the pathogenei of macular edema with BRVO. The increae in thee cytokine might be ued a a unique index of BRVO, through which we can determine the everity of the ichemic condition a being in a quiecent tate or an exacerbation of macular edema.
