Abstract :
Purpoe
To explore the relationhip between the refractive tate of the eye and high blood preure in a repreentative population.
Deign
Cae-control tudy.
Method
Three hundred twenty-one patient with eential hypertenion (mean age 53.9 ± 15.5 year) and 188 age-matched and ex-matched healthy control ubject (mean age 50.9 ± 7.3 year) from the ame regional Health Maintenance Organization were conecutively included for the tudy (P > .05 for age and ex). The refractive tate of the eye wa identified objectively by an autorefractometer and retinocopic examination, recording the autorefractometer value. pherical equivalent between −0.50 (included) and +0.50 (included) diopter were regarded a emmetropia. Value below or above thi interval were regarded a either myopia or hypermetropia. Mean pherical equivalent of the group were compared uing independent ample t tet; ditribution of refraction were compared with χ2 tet.
Reult
The mean pherical equivalent of the patient with eential hypertenion wa +0.88 ± 1.34 diopter (range −3.75 to +6.38 diopter), wherea the mean pherical equivalent of the control ubject wa −0.26 ± 1.12 diopter (range −5.00 to +3.38 diopter) (P < .0001). Wherea 61.4% of hypertenive patient were hypermetropic, 18.1% of normotenive patient were hypermetropic (P < .0001).
Concluion
There i a trong aociation of eential arterial hypertenion with hypermetropia, which ha not been previouly reported. Given the finding of thi tudy, we recommend that patient who have hypermetropia and have had no recent ytemic examination hould at leat have their blood preure checked.
