Abstract
Purpoe
To decribe bilateral blindne reulting from infection with community-acquired methicillin-reitant taphylococcu aureu (MRA).
Deign
Obervational cae report.
Method
A 44-year-old man developed proptoi, ptoi, ophthalmoplegia, and no light perception viion after attempting to lance a naal putule. A naal culture grew MRA. Imaging howed bilateral orbital celluliti, paninuiti, and cavernou inu thromboi. The right fundu howed evere ichemia, but the left fundu wa eentially normal.
Reult
Depite initiation of appropriate antibiotic early in the coure of infection, the patient lot ight in both eye. urgical drainage of the paranaal inue and ue of intravenou corticoteroid and heparin led to the reolution of orbital celluliti.
Concluion
MRA orbital celluliti can progre to irreverible blindne depite antibiotic treatment. A new, community-acquired clone of thi organim ha exhibited increaed potential for tiue invaion.
