Frontali upenion for Upper Eyelid Ptoi: Evaluation of Different urgical Deign and uture Material

Purpoe To compare two ling deign (ingle loop or double pentagon) and a variety of uture material that wa ued in frontali upenion urgery for correction of upper eyelid ptoi. Deign Retropective, nonrandomized, comparative interventional cae erie. Method Medical record review of 99 patient (164 urgerie) who underwent frontali upenion urgery for upper eyelid ptoi wa conducted at the Jule tein Eye Intitute in 1996 to 2002. Functional and cometic ucce, margin reflex ditance (MRD) and lagophthalmo were evaluated. Reult MRD increaed an average of 1.1 mm after the operation (P < .001). Ptoi recurrence wa noticed in 42 cae (26%); polytetrafluoroethylene achieved the lowet recurrence rate (15%), although not tatitically ignificant. No difference in functional ucce, ptoi recurrence, or change in MRD wa noticed between ingle loop and double pentagon deign. A better cometic outcome wa noted in cae in which nylon uture wa ued. Complication included four cae (2.4%) of over-correction, three cae (1.8%) of uture infection (all in polytetrafluoroethylene), two cae of pyogenic granuloma (1.2%), and two cae (1.2%) of uture expoure. Concluion Frontali upenion for upper eyelid ptoi reulted in 26% ptoi recurrence after a mean of 12 month from firt urgery. Polytetrafluoroethylene howed the lowet incidence of ptoi recurrence. No tatitically ignificant difference wa found between different uture material or loop hape that wa ued in the urgical technique. A better cometic outcome, a graded by different oberver, wa noted in cae in which a nylon ling wa ued.
