Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate intraocular preure (IOP) and it demographic aociation in an urban and rural population in Northern China.
Deign
Population-baed cohort tudy.
Method
In the Beijing Eye tudy, IOP wa meaured by noncontact pneumatonometry. Mean age wa 56.20 ± 10.59 year (range, 40–101 year).
Reult
Mean IOP wa 16.11 ± 3.39 mm Hg (median, 16 mm Hg; range, 7–60 mm Hg). In the rural group and the urban population group, repectively, IOP wa ignificantly (P = .016 and P = .029, repectively) lower in the high-age group (≥75 year) than in the middle-age group (55–64 year). In the rural group, IOP wa additionally ignificantly lower in the age group of 40 to 44 year than in the middle-age group, which ugget a revered U-like coure. A multiple regreion analyi revealed that IOP ignificantly increaed with myopia (P = .024), and that it wa tatitically independent of rural area v urban area (P = .12) and gender (P = .71).
Concluion
In the Northern Chinee population, mean and median of IOP that i meaured by pneumatonometry i 16 mm Hg with a normal range (mean ± two D) of 10 to 22 mm Hg. In cro-ectional analyi, IOP lightly increaed toward an age of 55 to 64 year and decreaed toward higher age. IOP increaed with myopia. It wa not aociated with rural v urban region or gender.
