Abstract :
Purpoe
To ae the 3-year incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a French population.
Deign
The “Pathologie Oculaire Liée à l’Age” (POLA) tudy, a population-baed propective cohort tudy.
Method
Retinal photograph were graded according to the international claification. Early age-related maculopathy (ARM) wa defined by the preence of (1) oft inditinct druen (>125 μm) and/or (2) oft ditinct druen (>125 μm) aociated with pigmentary abnormalitie.
Reult
The 3-year incidence of AMD wa 0.49% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.13 to 0.85) and increaed ignificantly with age, reaching 3.41% (95% CI: 0 to 7.2) in participant aged 80 year or more. After adjutment for age, eye with early ARM at baeline were 78 time more at rik of developing AMD than eye without early ARM (OR = 78.4, 95% CI: 14.6 to 420.1).
Concluion
Thi tudy confirm that AMD develop mainly in ubject aged 80 year or older, and in ubject with early ARM.
