Anaphylactoid Reaction After Verteporfin Therapy

Purpoe To report a cae of anaphylactoid reaction in a woman after initial expoure to verteporfin and to alert phyician of thi potentially life-threatening reaction. Deign Interventional cae report. Method An 80-year-old woman who wa found to have exudative age-related macular degeneration on clinical examination and fluorecein angiography underwent treatment with verteporfin photodynamic therapy (PDT). Thirty minute after verteporfin PDT infuion, the patient experienced throat contriction, welling of her hand, and evere hortne of breath. he received immediate intravenou treatment with methylpredniolone, diphenhydramine, and famotidine and wa admitted for obervation. Reult The patient’ ymptom reolved, and he experienced no long-term ide effect related to PDT. Routine noninvaive pule oximetry, however, did reult in finger dicoloration and uperficial burn. Evaluation revealed that her ymptom were noncardiac in origin. Concluion Verteporfin can reult in an anaphylactoid reaction. Treating phyician hould be advied of poible photoenitizing reaction once the patient ha received verteporfin PDT.
