Abstract
Purpoe
To determine the concentration of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) in the aqueou humor of highly myopic eye.
Deign
Obervational cae erie.
Method
The PEDF concentration in the aqueou humor of 23 eye of 17 patient with high myopia (axial length >26 mm) who underwent cataract urgery wa meaured by enzyme-linked immunoorbent aay.
Reult
The mean concentration of PEDF in eye with high myopia (0.54 ± 0.12 μg/ml) wa ignificantly lower than that in control eye (0.86 ± 0.04 μg/ml, P = .0022). The PEDF level in myopic eye with chorioretinal atrophy (0.32 ± 0.05 μg/ml) wa lower than that in myopic eye without chorioretinal atrophy (0.71 ± 0.12 μg/ml; P = .041) and control eye (P = .0003).
Concluion
The ignificantly lower concentration of PEDF in eye with chorioretinal atrophy–aociated high myopia probably reulted from degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelial cell and/or the retinal ganglion cell that are the main ource of PEDF in the eye.
