Purpoe
To provide an overview of the current tate of knowledge of amblyopia and highlight recent advance in diagnoi and treatment.
Deign
Review of literature and perpective.
Method
MEDLINE earch for amblyopia, with a review of all recent literature adding author’ peronal perpective on the finding.
Reult
Increaed awarene of amblyopia and better creening technique are required to identify children who are at rik for amblyopia at a younger age. Randomized, controlled trial have etablihed atropine penalization a a viable alternative to occluion therapy, have uggeted that le treatment may be better tolerated and a effective a more traditionally ued doage, and have found no compelling evidence that treatment i beneficial clinically for older (over age 10) children with amblyopia.
Concluion
Early detection and treatment of amblyopia can improve the chance for a ucceful viual outcome. Conidering that the condition that place a patient at rik for amblyopia can be identified, that amblyopia repond to treatment, and that well-tolerated treatment for the condition are now recognized, it i not unreaonable to imagine that, in the near future, evere amblyopia could be eliminated a a public health problem.
