  • Abstract
Purpoe To determine the aqueou level of vacular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and pigment epithelium–derived factor (PEDF) in patient with active polypoidal choroidal vaculopathy (PCV) and choroidal neovacularization (CNV) econdary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and pathologic myopia. Deign Propective, comparative control tudy. Method Aqueou humor were collected from 32 eye of 32 patient for either active PCV or CNV. Among them, 11 eye had active and ymptomatic PCV, 12 eye had active CNV econdary to AMD, and nine eye had active CNV of pathologic myopia. Level of VEGF and PEDF were determined by commercially available enzyme-linked immunoorbent aay kit. A group of 10 aqueou ample from 10 patient who underwent cataract urgery without other ocular or ytemic dieae compried the control. Reult VEGF concentration in aqueou humor were markedly increaed in patient with PCV, CNV of AMD, and CNV of myopia when compared with the control (analyi of variance [ANOVA], P < .001). VEGF level in eye with PCV were, however, ignificantly lower than thoe of exudative AMD (P = .045). The PEDF level were alo ignificantly different among the group (ANOVA, P = .001), and we oberved increaed level in PCV, CNV of AMD, and CNV of myopia. Concluion VEGF and PEDF factor were coexpreed and increaed with poitive correlation in aqueou humor of eye with active PCV. The different level of both factor in eye of PCV and AMD might ugget ditinct clinical entitie or different angiogenei coure between PCV and AMD.
