Abstract
Purpoe
To decribe awarene of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) among patient receiving eye care at a tertiary ophthalmic center for diabetic eye dieae.
Deign
Propective, nonrandomized clinical cae erie.
Method
One hundred-fifty adult patient with diabete mellitu (DM) examined between July and October of 2003 for diabetic retinopathy (DR) were urveyed about HbA1c knowledge.
Reult
eventy-ix (51%) undertood HbA1c, 25 (17%) were not ure if they undertood, and 49 (33%) did not undertand. Patient who undertood HbA1c baed on duration of DM were a low a two (29%) of even with DM < 5 year and a high a 17 (55%) of 31 with DM > 15 year. eventy-ix (51%) had proliferative DR, among whom 33 (43%) undertood HbA1c, 69 (46%) had nonproliferative DR, among whom 39 (57%) undertood HbA1c, and five (3%) had no DR, among whom four (80%) undertood HbA1c.
Concluion
Approximately half of diabetic patient urveyed undertood HbA1c.
