Abstract :
Purpoe
To determine prevalence and caue of viual field lo (VFL) a determined by frequency doubling perimetry in elderly Chinee individual.
Deign
Population-baed, cro-ectional cohort tudy.
Method
The Beijing Eye tudy included 4439 of 5324 ubject (83.4%) who were invited to participate with an age of 40+ year. Viual field wa aeed by frequency doubling threhold perimetry. Main outcome meaure wa an abnormal viual field defined a at leat one tet location of reduced enitivity.
Reult
Of the 4439 people who were examined, 4350 ubject (98.0%; 8617 eye) provided meaurement data by frequency doubling perimetry. In ubject aged 40 to 49 year, the mot frequent caue for VFL wa degenerative myopia followed by glaucoma, other optic nerve dieae, and cataract. In the ubject aged 60 to 69 year, the mot frequent caue for VFL wa cataract, followed by glaucoma and degenerative myopia. In the ubject aged 70+ year, the mot frequent caue for VFL wa glaucoma, followed by cataract and degenerative myopia. VFL wa aociated ignificantly with age (P < .001), myopic refractive error (P < .001), rural region (P = .001), low level of education (P = .01), degree of nuclear cataract (P < .001), and intraocular preure (P < .001).
Concluion
In contrat to Wetern countrie, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy play a minor role a a caue for VFL in China.
