Abstract :
Purpoe
In 1989, World Health Organization conultant operated on trachomatou trichiai (TT) cae in Dhakhiliya region of Oman. We evaluated their current ocular tatu.
Deign
Thi wa an hitoric cohort tudy.
Method
Thi tudy wa conducted in an in-houe etting. Ninety-one patient with TT who underwent operation by the bilamellar taral rotation procedure (BTR) were our tudy population. Their preoperative, operative, and immediate potoperative data were retrieved from the regiter. taff member located and viited thee patient. They examined the eye and determined their viual, TT, and corneal tatu. They interviewed participant with a cloe-ended quetionnaire to ae the quality of life and atifaction for the TT ervice that were offered.
Reult
ixty-three patient could be followed. Among 72 eye that had undergone operation 17 year earlier, the recurrence rate wa 47.2% (95% CI, 35.7–58.8). In 21 unoperated eye (55%), TT wa noted. The aociation of TT recurrence to age, gender, type of TT, conjunctiviti, and active trachoma wa teted. The BTR for minor trichiai wa the rik factor for recurrence of TT (adjuted odd ratio, 3.9; 95% CI, 1.4–10.8).
Concluion
The high recurrence rate of TT, 17 year after BTR urgery and high rate of TT in eye that did not undergo urgical procedure earlier ugget that the caue of high recurrence hould be identified and addreed. The ongoing pathologic condition of carring of upper lid of both operated and unoperated eye could be reponible for lid tatu after 17 year of BTR urgerie. High percentage of refual becaue of long-term high recurrence could poe a challenge to reach the “elimination of blinding trachoma” by 2020.
