Abstract :
Purpoe To compare the characteritic of ocular herpe implex viru (HV) in patient with and without atopy. Deign Retropective cohort comparative tudy. Method Patient who preented at the Cornea ervice, Will Eye Hopital, between March 2003 and March 2004 who had been previouly diagnoed in the ame intitution a having ocular HV diagnoi or were jut diagnoed a having the dieae were aked to complete a tudy quetionnaire that enabled categorization into atopic and nonatopic. In April 2005, 223 patient who agreed to be in the tudy had their chart reviewed, and 125 patient were excluded according to excluion criteria: immunouppreion, follow-up le than one year, previou hitory of penetrating keratoplaty (PK) out of the Cornea ervice, and no active HV epiode during follow-up. main outcome meaure: Incidence of all type of HV recurrence. econdary outcome meaure: Bilaterality, viual lo, need for PK , and econdary bacterial infection in both group. HV epiode were claified into infectiou, inflammatory, and mixed for analyi. Reult Ninety eight patient (110 eye) were included in the tudy. Atopic/nonatopic (P value): the mean follow-up wa 11.6 (± 10.6)/8.8 year (± 8.4) (P = .14); the mean incidence of HV epiode per year of follow-up wa: total epiode 0.32 (± 0.36)/0.28 (± 0.33) (P = .14), infectiou 0.16 (± 0.22)/0.10 (± 0.14) (P < .01), inflammatory 0.11 (± 0.19)/0.11 (± 0.19) (P < .01), and mixed 0.09 (± 0.20)/0.07 (± 0.16) (P = .06); bilateral HV wa preent in 9/3 patient (P = .22); the mean lo of viion wa four line of nellen in both group; PK wa performed in 14 of 16 eye (P = .45); econdary bacterial infection wa preent in two of four eye (P = .26). Concluion Atopic patient had coniderably more infectiou and fewer inflammatory epiode when compared with nonatopic.
