Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate the relationhip between abnormal contrat enitivity and abnormal color viion among human immunodeficiency viru (HIV)-infected individual who have normal viual acuity and to eek hot factor that predict thee abnormalitie.
Deign
Noninterventional, cro-ectional tudy.
Method
We evaluated 71 HIV-infected ubject with viual acuity of 20/25 or better, clear media, and no viion-threatening retinal leion. Viual function wa determined uing the Pelli-Robon contrat enitivity tet and the Farnworth-Munell 100-Hue color tet (FM-100). Reult were compared with publihed value for normal population and to meaure of HIV dieae everity. We evaluated two level of impairment for each viual function. “Mild dyfunction” wa defined a ≥1 tandard deviation (D), but <2 D from normal mean. “Abnormal” wa defined a ≥2 D from normal mean.
Reult
The prevalence of abnormal contrat enitivity and abnormal color viion were 7.0% and 9.9%, repectively. We did not identify relationhip between impaired contrat enitivity and impaired color viion. Impaired color viion wa aociated with increaing age (r = 0.36, P = .002). We could not identify ignificant correlation between either contrat enitivity or color viion value and the following factor: current or nadir (lowet previou) CD4+ T-lymphocyte count, HIV blood level, and Karnofky core.
Concluion
Abnormal contrat enitivity and abnormal color viion can occur independently in HIV-infected individual and can be preent in the abence of evere immunouppreion.
