Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate the influence of variou rik factor for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) on the rate of undergoing photodynamic therapy (PDT).
Deign
An obervational population baed cohort tudy.
Method
etting: A ditrict of the larget health maintenance organization (HMO) in Irael. tudy Population: All HMO member in the ditrict, older than 50 year on January 1, 2001, who did not terminate their memberhip until May 31, 2005 (139,894 member); of thoe, 283 underwent PDT for AMD during the tudy period (775 procedure). Obervation Procedure: We extracted information from the chronic dieae regitry of the HMO a well a demographic information including age, gender, country of birth, place of reidency, and ocial ecurity economic tatu. Main Outcome Meaure:Effect of variou rik factor for AMD on the rate of PDT.
Reult
The age-adjuted proportion of patient requiring PDT wa ignificantly higher in hypertenive (P = .03, χ2 tet), in hyperlipidemic (P = .002), in ichemic heart dieae patient (P = .002) and among male (P = .03) and Ahkenazi Jew (P = .02). No ignificant difference in PDT rate wa noted in diabetic, congetive heart failure (CHF), and chronic renal failure (CRF) patient. PDT rate were lower in the lower ocioeconomic cla (P = .002). Logitic regreion found a ignificant effect of age, hyperlipidemia, hypertenion, ocioeconomic tatu, and gender on the rate of PDT, while ichemic heart dieae (IHD), diabete, CHF, CRF, place of birth, and place of reidence did not contribute ignificantly to the model.
Concluion
Advanced age, hypertenion, hyperlipidemia, male gender, and ocioeconomic tatu are rik factor for undergoing PDT for predominantly claic neovacular AMD.
