Abstract :
Purpoe
To oberve and document the effect of teroidal and nonteroidal antiinflammatory treatment on the formation of Elchnig pearl.
Deign
A propective, randomized, double blinded, placebo controlled, two-way-cro-over tudy.
Method
Thirty-nine eye of 32 patient with pronounced, regeneratory poterior capule opacification (PCO) were included. The patient were treated topically with predniolone and diclofenac (verum) or with lubricating eye drop (placebo) four time daily for one week. After a wah-out period of two week the patient received the contrary treatment alo four time daily for one week. Digital retroillumination image were taken at day one, three, five, eight, and 15 of each medication period. The change in the ize of 4675 Elchnig pearl were analyzed.
Reult
The mean cumulative area of all marked pearl/eye and follow-up wa 1.2 mm2 (range: 0.1 mm2 to 3.2 mm2). The mean pearl ize wa 12809 μm2 (range: 60 μm2 to 1.08 × 106 μm2). Between the follow-up examination, 1274 pearl diappeared (mean: 33 pearl/eye, range: five to 69 pearl; 27%) and 777 newly formed pearl appeared (mean: 20 pearl/eye, range: three to 53 pearl; 20%). There wa no tatitically ignificant difference in pearl ize change and in number of diappeared and newly appeared pearl between the verum and the placebo treatment.
Concluion
Topical predniolone and diclofenac do not influence the hort-term change of Elchnig pearl. Elchnig pearl diappear and appear within day. The degree of progreion and regreion varie greatly among eye.
