Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate topical interferon alfa-2b (IFN-α2b) for the treatment of recalcitrant ocular urface quamou neoplaia (ON).
Deign
Propective, noncomparative, interventional conecutive cae erie.
Method
Ten patient with recalcitrant ON were treated with topical IFN-α2b (1 million IU/ml) four time a day until clinical reolution of the leion or until the leion appeared nonreponive—that i, treatment failure. Progre wa aeed by clinical examination and photographic record, with a minimum follow-up of ix month.
Reult
Eight of 10 patient achieved clinical reolution from topical IFN-α2b treatment. One patient developed invaive quamou cell carcinoma and underwent exenteration. The other patient required further mitomycin C therapy to achieve clinical reolution. The mean duration to clinical reolution for the eight patient treated with IFN-α2b wa 21.9 week (range ix to 59 week). There have been no recurrence for any of the nine patient during follow-up (mean 55.0 week; range 26 to 84 week).
Concluion
Topical IFN-α2b i an important treatment modality for recalcitrant ON; it avoid the rik of further limbal tem cell detruction from other agent and urgical exciion. If invaive dieae i diagnoed at any tage, topical therapy i contraindicated, neceitating urgical exciion.
