Abstract :
Purpoe To evaluate the poible toxicity of indocyanine green (ICG) dye in macular hole urgery by comparing functional reult after ucceful urgerie performed with and without taining. Deign Propective obervational cae erie. Method In a tudy conducted at our department, 30 eye of 29 patient with idiopathic macular hole underwent par plana vitrectomy, with peeling of the internal limiting membrane (ILM). In 21 eye (group A), ICG taining wa ued to viualize the membrane; in nine eye (group B), no dye wa applied. Pre- and potoperative examination (at three, ix, 12, and 20 month) included viual acuity (VA) (nellen chart), lit-lamp biomicrocopy, multifocal electroretinography (mfERG), and optical coherence tomography (OCT). For tatitical analyi, the Mann-Whitney U tet and Newman-Keul pot hoc analyi were ued. Reult The macular hole wa cloed in all patient. At 20 month, VA improvement (logarithm of minimal angle of reolution unit) compared with baeline wa more pronounced in group B (P < .001) than in group A (P = .022); VA wa alo better for group B compared directly with group A (P = .048). For mfERG, preoperative repone were ubnormal. Potoperatively, repone initially decreaed, but at 20 month ignificant improvement wa een in both group (P < .001). When data from the group are compared at 20 month, ignificantly greater mfERG improvement wa found in group B in both central and perimacular area (P < .001). Concluion The ignificantly better outcome without taining may ugget dye toxicity. Alternative internal limiting membrane viualization ubtance with fewer advere effect (trypan blue, triamcinolone) may be preferable.
