Abstract
Purpoe
To examine the climatic condition at corneal donation for microbial categorie of potkeratoplaty endophthalmiti that have been reported to a national urveillance regitry.
Deign
Retropective cae-control tudy.
Method
Local weather information on the date of donor corneal procurement wa tabulated for reported cae of endophthalmiti after penetrating keratoplaty and then compared between candidal endophthalmiti and poturgical endophthalmiti that yielded bacteria or no microorganim or that were not cultured.
Reult
Compared with other potkeratoplaty endophthalmiti, candidal endophthalmiti after corneal tranplantation occurred ignificantly (P < .001) more often when outdoor afternoon temperature exceeded 75 F at the ource eye bank than on cooler day.
Concluion
Higher exterior temperature at donation may be aociated with an increaed relative rik of candidal tranmiion by keratoplaty, but a chain of cauation that link the donor’ environment to the recipient’ infection remain to be elucidated.
