Abstract
Purpoe
To explore the relationhip between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and incident hip fracture in the Medicare population.
Deign
Propective cohort tudy.
Method
With a 5% random ample of Medicare beneficiarie in 1995, 8596 cae were coded with exudative AMD; 26,942 cae were coded with atrophic AMD, and 1,013,748 cae were coded without AMD. The Medicare claim from 1996 to 1999 were evaluated for hip fracture code. The relationhip between AMD and incident hip fracture wa analyzed with multiple logitic regreion model, with adjutment for baeline, ocular, and ytemic covariate.
Reult
In adjuted analye, the rik of hip fracture wa imilar in cae that were coded with exudative AMD (odd ratio, 1.03; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.95, 1.12) compared with cae with no AMD but wa ignificantly higher in cae that were coded with atrophic AMD (odd ratio, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.06, 1.16).
Concluion
Medicare patient with a code for atrophic AMD had an 11% greater rik of hip fracture than did patient without a code for AMD over a four-year follow-up period.
