Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate the impact of dry eye yndrome (DE) on viion-aociated quality of life.
Deign
Cro-ectional tudy.
Method
We identified 450 participant in the Women’ Health tudy (WH) and 240 participant in the Phyician’ Health tudy (PH) and ent a upplementary quetionnaire aking how much their everyday activitie were limited by ymptom of dry eye and to what degree problem with their eye limited them in reading, driving, working at the computer, their profeional activity, and watching televiion. By deign, one-third of tudy ubject had clinically diagnoed DE or evere ymptom and two-third did not. We ued logitic regreion to examine relationhip of DE with reported problem with everyday activitie in each cohort and pooled etimate uing meta-analyi method.
Reult
Of the participant invited, 85% completed the upplementary quetionnaire, including 135 WH and 55 PH participant with DE, and 250 WH and 149 PH participant without DE. Controlling for age, diabete, hypertenion, and other factor, thoe with DE were more likely to report problem with reading ([odd ratio] OR = 3.64, 95% [confidence interval] CI 2.45 to 5.40, P < .0001); carrying out profeional work (OR = 3.49, 95% CI 1.72 to 7.09, P= 0.001); uing a computer (OR = 3.37, 95% CI 2.11 to 5.38, P < .0001); watching televiion (OR = 2.84, 95% CI 1.05 to 7.74, P = .04); driving during the day (OR = 2.80, 95% CI 1.58 to 4.96, P < .0001); and driving at night (OR = 2.20, 95% CI 1.48 to 3.28, P < .0001).
Concluion
DE i aociated with a meaurable advere impact on everal common and important tak of daily living, further implicating thi condition a an important public health problem deerving increaed attention and reource.
