Abstract :
Purpoe To compare the incidence of herpe implex viru (HV) epithelial recurrence and graft urvival after penetrating keratoplaty (PK) in patient with and without elf-reported atopy. Deign Retropective cohort comparative tudy. Method etting: Cornea ervice, Will Eye Hopital. tudy population: Patient who preented with previouly diagnoed ocular HV between March 2003 and March 2004 and who underwent primary PK for ocular HV at the Cornea ervice. From the 58 patient invited, 49 patient (50 eye) were included. Nine patient were ineligible in accordance with the excluion criteria: no active claic HV epiode before PK, immunouppreion, le than one year of follow-up, previou hitory of PK before preentation at the ervice. Eligible patient filled out a quetionnaire regarding their hitory of atopic dieae, conidering: preence of allergic rhiniti, athma, or atopic dermatiti. Ocular hitory wa obtained through chart review. main outcome meaure: Incidence of epithelial HV recurrence and corneal graft urvival in both group. Reult Each group (atopic and nonatopic) included 25 eye. The atopic patient had a mean incidence of 0.07 epiode/eye year (D ± 0.9) compared with 0.12/eye year (tandard deviation [D] ± 0.21) in the nonatopic (P = .002). At 10 year of follow-up, the urvival rate in the atopic wa of 92% and in the nonatopic wa of 79% (P = .88). Concluion Nonatopic had ignificantly more epithelial recurrence after PK compared to atopic; however, both group preented low incidence of recurrence and high graft urvival rate.
