Abstract
Purpoe
To ae the relationhip between tatin ue and the long-term incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Deign
Population-baed cohort tudy.
Method
Of 3,654 baeline (1992 to 1994) participant in the Blue Mountain Eye tudy initially aged 49+ year, 2,335 were reexamined after five year (1997 to 1999) and 1,952 after 10 year (2002 to 2004). tereocopic macular photograph were graded uing the Wiconin Age-related Maculopathy Grading ytem. Hitory, phyical examination, and fating blood ample provided data on poible rik factor. Dicrete linear logitic model were ued to ae rik of incident AMD.
Reult
After controlling for age, gender, and other confounding factor, compared with nonuer, tatin uer had a reduced rik of developing inditinct oft druen, the principal late AMD precuror leion (hazard ratio, 0.33; 95% confidence interval, 0.13 to 0.84).
Concluion
tatin ue wa not ignificantly aociated with overall early AMD incidence, but wa protective for inditinct oft druen, a key late AMD precuror leion.
