Abstract :
Purpoe
To ae the aociation between tatin ue and long-term incident cataract.
Deign
Population-baed cohort tudy.
Method
Of 3,654 baeline (1992 to 1994) elderly participant in the Blue Mountain Eye tudy (BME), 2,335 (75% of urvivor) were reexamined after five year (1997 to 1999) and 1,952 (76% of urvivor) after 10 year (2002 to 2004). Len photograph were taken and graded uing the Wiconin Cataract Grading ytem. Hitory, phyical examination, and fating blood ample provided data on poible rik factor. Dicrete linear logitic model were ued to ae the rik of cataract.
Reult
After controlling for age, gender, and other factor, tatin ue wa protective for any cataract (hazard ratio [HR] 0.52; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.29-0.93), but wa not ignificantly aociated with incident nuclear (HR 0.66; CI 0.35 to 1.25), cortical (HR 0.76; CI 0.44 to 1.33), or poterior ubcapular (PC) cataract (HR 1.47; CI 0.70 to 3.08).
Concluion
tatin ue wa found to reduce by 50% the rik of cataract development, principally nuclear or cortical cataract ubtype.
