Abstract :
Purpoe To ae the optical coherence tomography (OCT) characteritic of pontaneouly cloed macular hole (MH). Deign Retropective obervational cae erie. Method Among 510 conecutive eye examined for an MH before urgery, we retropectively identified 14 eye in which the MH cloed pontaneouly before the operation. At the time of diagnoi, nellen viual acuity (VA) wa meaured and all 14 eye underwent OCT1 or OCT3. The aperture and bae diameter of the MH were recorded. After pontaneou MH cloure, VA wa meaured again and OCT3 wa performed in all eye. The photoreceptor (PR) inner egment–outer egment (I–O) junction line wa examined to meaure any reidual defect at the foveal center. Reult Mean MH aperture diameter wa mall, le than 400 μm (mean ± tandard deviation [D], 161.8 ± 83.0 μm). After pontaneou cloure, mean VA increaed from 0.3 to 0.6. In all 14 eye, foveal continuity wa retored on OCT can. However, a defect in the photoreceptor I–O junction layer ranging from 25 to 110 μm (mean ± D, 64.1 ± 29.6 μm) wa preent in all eye. No correlation wa found, either between MH aperture diameter and the width of the PR defect (P = .68) or between VA and the width of the defect (P = .09). Concluion In a erie of 14 MH that had cloed pontaneouly, a defect wa een in the photoreceptor I–O junction line, although VA improved in all eye. When thi configuration i een in elderly patient without a hitory of MH, it may be taken a evidence of pontaneou cloure of an undiagnoed MH.
