Abstract :
Purpoe
To compare the poterior capule opacification (PCO) inhibiting effect of the round anterior and harp poterior optic edge profile of the Clariflex ilicone intraocular len (IOL) [AMO Inc, anta Ana, California, UA] with that of the double-round edge profile of the I40 (Phacoflex; AMO Inc, anta Ana, California, UA) ilicone IOL over a period of three year.
Deign
Propective, randomized, double-maked, bilateral clinical trial.
Method
The tudy took place at the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical Univerity of Vienna, Autria. Fifty-two patient with age-related cataract (104 eye) were included in the tudy. Each patient received an I40 IOL (round edge) in one eye and a Clariflex IOL with OptiEdge (harp poterior optic edge) in the other eye. Follow-up examination were at one week, one month, ix month, and one, two, and three year. Digital retroillumination image were taken of each eye. The amount of PCO wa ubjectively aeed with the lit-lamp and objectively aeed by automated image analyi oftware (the computer program Automated Quantification of After-Cataract [AQUA]; Vienna, Autria) one, two, and three year after urgery.
Reult
The Clariflex len howed markedly le PCO at one, two, and three year after urgery. The mean AQUA PCO core wa 1.39 for the I40 and 0.56 for the Clariflex len after one year, etimated at 1.64 and 0.57 after two year, and at 2.04 and 0.64, repectively, after three year (cale zero to 10; P < .001). The Nd:YAG laer capulotomy rate wa far higher in the I40 group (Five cae v one cae at three year).
Concluion
The harp poterior optic edge profile of the Clariflex ilicone IOL led to marked and conitently le PCO than the round-edged I40 IOL one, two, and three year after urgery.
