Abstract :
Purpoe To invetigate the relationhip between dietary macronutrient intake at baeline and the five-year incidence of the three main type of cataract in older people. Deign Population-baed cohort tudy. Method etting: An urban community near ydney, Autralia. tudy population: The Blue Mountain Eye tudy (BME) examined 3,654 predominantly Caucaian participant aged 49+ year during 1992 to 1994, and then 2,335 urvivor (71.5%) after five year. Of thee 2,335 ubject, 1988 (85%) completed a Willett-derived food frequency quetionnaire (FFQ) at baeline. obervation procedure: A 145-item FFQ wa ued to ae nutrient intake and len photography wa ued to ae the preence of cataract at both time point. main outcome meaure: Incidence of cortical, nuclear, and poterior ubcapular (PC) cataract wa aeed via len photographic grading following the Wiconin cataract grading method. Reult After adjuting for multiple known cataract rik factor, higher dietary intake of omega-3 polyunaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) were aociated with a reduced incidence of nuclear cataract. The odd ratio (OR) for ubject in the highet quintile of intake compared to thoe in the lowet quintile wa 0.58 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.35 to 0.97), Ptrend = .027. imilarly, for PC cataract, higher dietary intake of protein were protective (OR 0.28; 95% CI 0.10 to 0.76), Ptrend = .015. Dietary macronutrient intake wa not aociated with incident cortical cataract. Concluion Higher dietary intake of n-3 PUFA may decreae the five-year rik of nuclear cataract, wherea higher dietary intake of protein may decreae rik for PC cataract.
