Abstract :
Purpoe
To examine the aociation between everity of viual field lo (VFL) and elf-reported health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in a population-baed ample.
Deign
Population-baed cro-ectional tudy.
Method
Participant in the Lo Angele Latino Eye tudy (LALE) underwent a comprehenive ophthalmic examination including viual field teting by the Humphrey Automated Field Analyzer II (wedih Interactive Threholding Algorithm [ITA] tandard 24-2) [Carl Zei Meditec, Dublin, California, UA]. Mean deviation (MD) core were ued to determine everity of VFL both a a continuou variable and tratified by everity: no VFL (MD ≥ −2 decibel [dB]), mild VFL (−6 dB < MD < −2 dB), and moderate to evere VFL (MD < −6 dB). HRQOL wa aeed by the Medical Outcome tudy 12-item hort-Form Health urvey (F-12) and the National Eye Intitute Viual Function Quetionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25). Linear regreion analye and analyi of covariance were ued to ae the relationhip between HRQOL core and VFL.
Reult
Of the 5,213 participant included in thi tudy, 18% had unilateral mild, 1.5% unilateral moderate to evere, 19% bilateral mild, and 6.5% bilateral moderate to evere VFL. Wore NEI-VFQ-25 and F-12 HRQOL core were aociated with VFL in a linear manner. Four- to 5-dB difference in VFL were aociated with a five-point difference in the NEI-VFQ-25 compoite and mot ubcale core. Peron with VFL had the greatet difficulty with driving activitie, dependency, mental health, ditance viion, and peripheral viion.
Concluion
HRQOL i diminihed even in peron with relatively mild VFL on the bai of MD core. Prevention and management of peron with VFL may be important in preventing or reducing poor HRQOL related to difficultie in driving, ditance and peripheral viion activitie, and a ene of dependency.
