Abstract :
Purpoe
To examine the aociation of hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductae inhibitor (tatin) with the five-year incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Deign
Population-baed cohort tudy.
Method
etting: Beaver Dam, Wiconin. tudy population: Participant included peron 53 to 96 year of age at examination in 1998 to 2000 (n = 2,962), of whom 2,204 participated in a follow-up five year later. obervation procedure: tandardized procedure were ued for phyical examination, blood collection, and quetionnaire adminitration. AMD wa determined by grading image of the poterior pole uing a tandard protocol. tandard univariate and multivariate analye were performed. main outcome meaure: Incident early and late AMD and progreed AMD.
Reult
There were 1,347 and 1,638 peron not uing tatin and 339 and 429 uing tatin at the 1998 to 2000 examination at rik of early and late AMD, repectively. The unadjuted five-year incidence of early and late AMD, repectively, wa 5.9% and 1.8% in thoe not uing tatin and 6.8% and 2.3% in thoe uing tatin. While controlling for age, gender, moking tatu, and multivitamin ue, a hitory of tatin ue wa not aociated with the five-year incidence of early AMD (odd ratio [OR] 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.71 to 1.91, P = .55), progreion of AMD (OR 1.16, 95% CI 0.75 to 1.78, P = .51) or incidence of late AMD (OR 1.27, 95% CI 0.60 to 2.69. P = .53).
Concluion
Thee finding do not how an aociation between tatin ue and the incidence or progreion of AMD over a five-year period.
