Abstract :
Purpoe
To compare at two, three, and four year after urgery the effect on bet-corrected viual acuity (BCVA) of anterior chamber (AC) intraocular lene (IOL) and poterior chamber (PC) IOL implanted after vitreou preentation (VP) during extracapular cataract extraction in patient having ufficient capular upport for a nonutured PC IOL.
Deign
The tudy wa a randomized propective, long-term, clinical trial.
Method
Patient at 19 Department of Veteran Affair Medical Center having VP during cataract urgery with ufficient capular upport were randomized to receive either a PC IOL (230 patient) or an AC IOL (208 patient). Patient having inufficient capular upport (IC; 143 patient) and a 5% random ample of nonvitreou preentation patient (NVP; 521 patient) were propectively followed in the ame fahion.
Reult
There wa no ignificant difference on the major outcome meaure of BCVA of 20/40 or better between the PC IOL and AC IOL group at two (88.7% v 82.2%; P = .23), three (82.5% v 91.8%; P = .18), and four (88.6% v 92.6%; P = .69) year of follow-up. The IC patient had ignificantly wore (P < .0083) or a trend to be wore (P < .05) BCVA of 20/40 or better than the other three group at two and four year.
Concluion
The ignificant difference that the PC IOL wa better than the AC IOL on the major outcome meaure at one year reported previouly wa not maintained in later year. The poor reult for IC patient reported previouly at one year continue at two and four year.
