Abstract :
Purpoe To evaluate the microbiology of pediatric orbital celluliti aociated with inuiti. Deign Retropective review of medical record of pediatric patient treated for orbital celluliti. Method All pediatric patient treated for orbital celluliti aociated with inuiti at Texa Children’ Hopital between December 1, 2001 and eptember 30, 2005 were reviewed. Data collected included patient age, hitory, microbiology reult, and urgical intervention. Reult Thirty-eight cae were identified. Fifteen cae required medical management, wherea 23 patient received a combination of medical and urgical intervention. Three patient had multiple urgical procedure performed. Of the procedure performed, four were inu irrigation, 12 were inuotomy and drainage, nine were orbitotomy with drainage of abce, and one wa craniotomy with drainage of abce. urgical apirate pecimen yielded a higher poitive culture reult rate with 9/9 of orbital abcee and 13/16 of inu apirate demontrating a poitive yield. Two of the 27 blood culture had a poitive yield. taphylococcu pecie wa the mot common organim iolated. Methicillin-reitant . aureu (MRA) repreented 73% of . aureu iolate. treptococcu pecie wa the next mot common pathogen. Three culture yielded Haemophilu pecie with one being poitive for H. influenzae. Concluion Organim reponible for cauing pediatric orbital celluliti are evolving, with taphylococcu followed by treptococcu pecie being the mot common pathogen. The occurrence of MRA in pediatric orbital celluliti i increaing, and empiric antimicrobial therapy hould be directed againt thee organim if they are prevalent in the community. inu and orbital abce apirate yielded the greatet number of poitive culture, though thee invaive urgical procedure hould be performed only when clinically indicated.
