Abstract :
Purpoe
To etimate the prevalence of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in a population-baed ample of ubject 60 year of age or older in Thealoniki, Greece.
Deign
Cro-ectional population-baed tudy.
Method
ubject randomly identified from municipality regiter in Thealoniki underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination. Glaucoma wa defined in two way. Definition 1 wa baed on the preence of both glaucomatou optic dik and confirmed glaucomatou viual field defect. ubject alo were claified a having glaucoma when the clinical judgment wa trongly in favor of the preence of glaucoma even though the trict criteria were not fulfilled (definition 2).
Reult
Of the 3,617 eligible ubject, 2,554 (71%) participated. The prevalence of OAG wa 3.8% and 5.5% by definition 1 and 2, repectively. The prevalence of primary OAG wa 2.7% and 3.8% by definition 1 and 2, repectively, and the prevalence of peudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG) wa 1.1% and 1.7% by definition 1 and 2, repectively. Peudoexfoliation wa preent in 11.9% of participant, wherea 15.2% among thoe with peudoexfoliation had PEXG.
Concluion
The prevalence of OAG in the Thealoniki Eye tudy (TE) i imilar or lightly higher compared with other population-baed tudie in White peron. The overall lightly higher prevalence of OAG in the TE compared with other tudie may be attributed to the high prevalence of PEXG in the TE.
