Difference in Parapapillary Atrophy between Glaucomatou and Normal Eye: The Beijing Eye tudy Original Reearch Article

Purpoe To determine in a population-baed tudy whether parapapillary atrophy i aociated with glaucoma. Deign Population-baed cro-ectional tudy. Method The Beijing Eye tudy included 4,439 of 5,324 ubject invited to participate (repone rate, 83.4%). Mean age wa 56.2 ± 10.6 year (range, 40 to 101 year). Color optic dik photograph (30 degree) were examined morphometrically. Parapapillary atrophy wa divided into α and β zone. Glaucomatou optic nerve atrophy wa defined by a glaucomatou optic nerve head appearance. Reult After excluding highly myopic eye, data from 4,003 (90.2%) ubject entered the tatitical analyi. Glaucomatou optic nerve damage wa detected in 93 (2.3%) ubject. The β zone of parapapillary atrophy a a whole and meaured eparately in four dik ector wa ignificantly larger and occurred ignificantly more frequently in the glaucomatou group than in the nonglaucomatou group (β zone total area, 1.21 ± 1.92 mm2 v 0.32 ± 0.99 mm2; P < .001). In multiple regreion analyi, area of β zone wa ignificantly aociated with age (P < .001), myopic refractive error (P < .001), and preence of glaucomatou optic nerve damage (P < .001), with no ignificant difference between chronic open-angle glaucoma (n = 72) and chronic angle-cloure glaucoma (n = 21; β zone area, 1.20 ± 0.39 mm2 v 1.19 ± 0.46 mm2; P = .69). Concluion In a population-baed etting, the β zone of parapapillary atrophy i ignificantly larger and occur more frequently in glaucomatou eye than in normal eye of Chinee adult, with no marked difference between chronic open-angle glaucoma and primary angle-cloure glaucoma.
