Abstract :
Purpoe
To ae the aociation of cardiovacular rik factor and ocular perfuion preure with early and advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Latino.
Deign
Population-baed, cro-ectional tudy.
Method
Data were collected from a population-baed ample of elf-identified adult Latino uing tandardized protocol for aeing blood preure and intraocular preure (IOP) meaurement and tereocopic macular photography. Hypertenion wa defined a either a hitory of hypertenion or ytolic blood preure (BP) > 140 mm Hg ± diatolic blood preure (DBP) ≥ 85 mm Hg. Ocular perfuion preure (OPP) wa defined a the difference between mean arterial blood preure and IOP. AMD wa diagnoed from photographic grading by maked trained grader. Logitic regreion wa ued to ae aociation.
Reult
Gradable retinal photograph were available in 5,875 participant. After adjuting for age, gender, and cigarette moking, higher DBP and uncontrolled diatolic hypertenion were aociated with exudative AMD (odd ratio [OR], 1.8; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1 to 2.8; and OR, 3.3; CI, 1.2 to 9.3, repectively). Higher OPP wa aociated with a decreaed rik of geographic atrophy (GA) (OR, 0.4 per 10 mm Hg; CI, 0.3 to 0.5). Low pule preure wa aociated with a lower rik of exudative AMD (OR, 0.2; CI, 0.1 to 0.6). Obeity wa aociated with increaed retinal pigment (OR, 1.6; CI, 1.0 to 2.3).
Concluion
Thee data ugget that in Latino cardiovacular rik factor may play a role in advanced AMD. Given that Latino have a high prevalence of cardiovacular rik factor, an intervention aimed at reducing thee rik factor may alo have a beneficial impact on the rik of having early and advanced AMD.
