Abstract :
Purpoe To identify factor aociated with undiagnoed open-angle glaucoma (OAG), primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and peudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG) in an elderly population in Thealoniki, Greece. Deign Cro-ectional population-baed tudy. Method Randomly elected ubject ≥60 year (n = 2,554) participated in the tudy. ubject were claified a having POAG or PEXG according to pecific criteria and uing a two-cale definition of glaucoma. Undiagnoed glaucoma wa defined a abence of either prior diagnoi of glaucoma or ocular hypertenion or prior medical treatment for glaucoma or prior glaucoma urgery. Logitic regreion analye were performed with age, gender, family hitory of glaucoma, hitory of cataract urgery, viual acuity, vertical cup-to-dik (C/D) ratio, intraocular preure, Advanced Glaucoma Intervention tudy viual field core, time ince lat eye doctor viit, and type of OAG a covariate. Reult The prevalence of undiagnoed glaucoma wa 57.1% (56/98) for POAG, ignificantly higher than the prevalence of 34.9% (15/43) for PEXG (P = .017). POAG patient preented three to four time increaed rik to be undiagnoed compared with PEXG patient (P = .02 and P = .04, repectively). Patient with OAG who had not viited an ophthalmologit during the lat year had ix time an increaed rik to be undiagnoed (P = .003). In POAG, maller vertical C/D ratio wa tatitically ignificantly aociated with an increaed rik to be undiagnoed (P = .008). Concluion Lack of regular viit to an ophthalmologit wa a major factor for undiagnoed OAG. POAG wa more likely to be undiagnoed than PEXG. ince C/D ratio wa aociated with undiagnoed POAG, tandardized protocol involving thorough evaluation of the optic dik are recommended for ophthalmologit.
