Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate racial and ethnic difference in the incidence of conjunctival melanoma in a large population-baed tudy.
Deign
Obervational cro-ectional tudy.
Method
Uing data from 1992 through 2003 provided by the National Cancer Intitute’ urveillance, Epidemiology, and End Reult (EER) program, we calculated age-adjuted incidence rate of conjunctival melanoma in variou racial and ethnic group (Black, American Indian, Aian and Pacific Ilander, Hipanic, and non-Hipanic White). In addition, we calculated the tandard incidence ratio (rik ratio) and 95% confidence interval to decribe the difference within thee racial and ethnic group.
Reult
From 1992 through 2003, there were a total of 168 conjunctival melanoma diagnoed in 13 EER regitrie with known racial and ethnic group. The annual age-adjuted incidence rate (per million population) of conjunctival melanoma wa 0.18 (Black), 0.17 (American Indian), 0.15 (Aian), 0.33 (Hipanic), and 0.49 (non-Hipanic White). The difference in the incidence of conjunctival melanoma between White and Black or Aian wa tatitically ignificant, but wa not ignificant between Black and Aian.
Concluion
The overall White-to-Black incidence ratio in conjunctival melanoma wa 2.6:1, which i much le than that of uveal melanoma (18:1) and cutaneou melanoma (13:1 to 26:1), but i imilar to that of mucoal melanoma (2.2:1 to 2.3:1). The caue and ignificance of thi difference of racial and ethnic incidence in variou melanoma are dicued.
