Abstract :
Purpoe To ae the impact of upper eyelid myectomy urgery on blepharopam with aociated apraxia of lid opening (ALO), dry eye, photophobia, and daily functioning in patient who are refractory to botulinum toxin treatment. Deign Noncomparative, conecutive, interventional cae erie. Method A retropective chart review wa performed to identify 100 conecutive patient beginning on January 1, 2000, who underwent upper eyelid myectomy urgery for blepharopam and fulfilled the incluion criteria. A urvey wa ent to all patient. Data were entered in an anonymou manner into a preadheet and analyi wa performed uing the tudent t tet with ignificance et at P < .05. Reult Forty-five (88%) patient experienced ALO before urgery, among which 15 (33%) patient tated they were completely cured and 20 (44%) other had more than 50% improvement in ALO with urgery. In 20 of 30 patient who continued botulinum toxin treatment after urgery, the effect lated longer. Twelve (29%) of 42 patient who experienced dry eye before urgery improved. Eighteen (41%) of the 44 patient who experienced light enitivity before urgery improved. Thirty-even (82%) patient noted their cometic appearance to be better after urgery. The cumulative preoperative diability core wa 14.11 ± 5.78 (59%), wherea the cumulative potoperative diability core wa 5.20 ± 8.25 (22%; P < .01). Concluion Upper eyelid myectomy urgery appear to be effective in treating blepharopam with aociated ALO in mot patient who are refractory to botulinum toxin injection and can provide improvement in the quality of life.
