Abstract :
Purpoe
To tudy the tability of the refraction 15 month after myopic laer epithelial keratomileui (LAEK) performed in thin cornea with and without adjuvant mitomycin C (MMC).
Deign
Retropective review.
Method
One hundred and thirty-ix conecutive eye that had undergone LAEK to correct their myopia and that had a preoperative central corneal thickne (CCT) of <500 μm at Vium Madrid, pain, were included. Intraoperative MMC wa applied when the ablation depth exceeded 50 μm (49 eye). We compared the reidual refraction between the three- and 15-month examination to detect a poible myopic change that would ugget econdary corneal ectaia.
Reult
Mean preoperative CCT ± tandard deviation (D) wa 484.4 ± 11.8 μm (range, 440 to 499 μm). Mean CCT ± D three month after urgery wa 417.9 ± 32.1 μm (range, 339 to 473 μm). Mean preoperative pherical refraction ± D wa −3.49 ± 2.10 diopter (D). Mean preoperative cylinder ± D wa −0.87 ± 1.20 D. The mean reidual phere ± D wa 0.15 ± 0.40 D three month after urgery and 0.11 ± 0.60 D 15 month after urgery (P = .45). The mean cylinder ± D wa −0.13 ± 0.30 D and −0.25 ± 0.50 D, repectively (P = .06). Both the uncorrected viual acuity (UCVA) and the bet-pectacle corrected viual acuity (BCVA) howed tatitically ignificant improvement on the 15-month examination (P = .01 and P = .0001, repectively). When analyzed eparately, the ubgroup treated with intraoperative MMC alo howed tability of the refraction and a tatitically ignificant improvement both in UCVA and in BCVA. Topography howed no ign of ectaia in any cae.
Concluion
Myopic LAEK performed on thin cornea, regardle of the ue of intraoperative MMC, eem to obtain table refractive reult, with no ign of ectaia during a 15-month follow-up.
