Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate poible change in macular morphology after cataract urgery with combined primary poterior capulorhexi and poterior optic buttonholing in comparion to conventional in-the-bag intraocular len (IOL) implantation.
Deign
Propective randomized tudy.
Method
Fifty conecutive age-related cataract patient with normal macular morphology and function waiting for bilateral cataract urgery were enrolled. Cataract urgery with combined primary poterior capulorhexi and poterior optic buttonholing wa performed in one eye; in the fellow eye cataract urgery wa performed with in-the-bag IOL implantation, leaving the poterior len capule untouched. Optical coherence tomography meaurement were performed one week and one month potoperatively.
Reult
During follow-up, no tatitically ignificant change of macular morphology could be oberved in any of the teted patient. Mean central retinal thickne, minimum and maximum retinal thickne, and central retinal volume were all tatitically comparable between the eye with combined primary poterior capulorhexi and poterior optic buttonholing and the control eye (P > .05). Bet-corrected viual acuity wa full in all patient (nellen 20/25 and better). No cae of ubclinical macular edema were oberved.
Concluion
Cataract urgery with combined primary poterior capulorhexi and poterior optic buttonholing apparently doe not increae the rik for potoperative macular edema in patient with a normal macula, ince no cae of biomicrocopically noticeable macular edema with viual lo were oberved in the firt 1,000 eye with primary poterior capulorhexi/poterior optic buttonholing cataract urgery and no cae of ubclinical macular edema wa found in thi propective randomized tudy.
