Abstract :
Purpoe To determine the morphologic feature (grade and type) of poterior taphyloma and to analyze the relationhip between the morphologic feature and the incidence of myopic macular leion. Deign Obervational cae erie. Method Two hundred and nine eye of 108 conecutive patient with high myopia were tudied. The grade of taphyloma wa determined from B-can ultraonographic image acro the optic dik. The type of taphyloma wa determined by binocular funducopy and wa claified according to the criteria of Curtin. The participant were divided into two group: younger than 50 year and 50 year and older. The long-term morphologic progreion of taphyloma wa analyzed in nine patient who were followed up for more than 20 year. Reult Ninety percent of 209 eye had a taphyloma. The prevalence of taphyloma and more advanced grade of taphyloma (> grade 2) were ignificantly higher in the older than in the younger patient. The higher grade of taphyloma were aociated with more evere myopic retinal degeneration. Type II taphyloma wa the mot prominent overall; however, in older ubject, the incidence of type II wa decreaed ignificantly, and that of type IX wa increaed ignificantly. The eye with type IX taphyloma tended to have more evere myopic retinal degeneration than eye with type II taphyloma. The long-term follow-up tudy demontrated a progreion from type II to type IX with increaing age. Concluion Thee reult ugget that the morphologic feature of taphyloma woren a the patient age. The progreion from type II to type IX probably increae the mechanical tenion on the macular area of highly myopic eye, which then lead to myopic fundu leion.
