Abstract :
Purpoe To determine the demographic factor aociated with central corneal thickne (CCT) in Northwetern American Indian/Alakan Native (AI/AN) and to compare thee CCT meaurement with thoe of White and African-American peron. Deign Cro-ectional comparative, obervational tudy. Method We performed ultraonic pachymetry (DGH-500 Pachette; DGH Technologie, Exton, Pennylvania, UA) on a random ample of AI/AN ubject from three randomly elected AI/AN tribe in the Northwet United tate (n = 429). Pachymetry alo wa performed on a convenience ample of White (n = 46) and African-American (n = 33) peron. Our main outcome meaure wa the average of right and left eye CCT. Reult Average AI/AN CCT wa 554.8 ± 33.9 μm. AI/AN CCT wa found to be thicker than that of African American (528.5 ± 33.2 μm) but imilar to that of White peron (551.9 ± 28.3 μm). CCT wa greater in AI/AN female than in AI/AN male (557.6 ± 33.3 μm v 550.1 ± 34.5 μm; P = .03). We found no difference in CCT baed on percent AI/AN heritage, age, and keratometry reading. We found no ignificant difference in mean CCT between AI/AN with glaucoma (556.2 μm) and thoe who did not have glaucoma (556.6 μm). Concluion CCT meaurement for the Northwet AI/AN population are imilar to thoe of White peron but thicker than thoe of African-American peron. Although glaucoma i common in AI/AN, we did not find an aociation with thin CCT. We need future tudie to explore the rik factor for glaucoma in AI/AN.
